TypeScript has officially become the number one programming language on GitHub, dethroning both JavaScript and Python in the latest 2025 report. With 36 million new GitHub users joining in the past year alone - largely due to the rise of "vibe coding" - TypeScript has emerged as the language of choice for AI-assisted development. We break down why TypeScript's type safety makes it perfect for AI tools, allowing for more efficient coding and better collaboration between developers and AI. While there used to be "upfront cost" and slower development with TypeScript, the AI revolution has flipped the script - now TypeScript actually accelerates development and enables "vibe coders" to build more reliably.

So there is this new GitHub report that shows Typescript is now the number one language uh in the world. You you said you like Typescript or something along those lines. I love Typescript. [laughter] Love it. Yeah. So I saw this and I found that uh to be interesting. So we see JavaScript was for a long time the number one programming language on GitHub and then Python was for some time. You see 2024 start of 2025 Python was number one and now Typescript out of nowhere is number one. It's not out of nowhere though is it? Yeah, it's not it's there's a very specific reason why and that's because of AI. And I was I was looking at the report and I was looking at some of the numbers GitHub are reporting on just their overall usage. And in the past year, they've had 36 million new users of GitHub. They have 180 million users in total. So that's to 20% have joined GitHub in the last year. And no doubt that's got something to do with Vibe coding. Um and the coding language of choice from vibe coders is TypeScript. Typescript. So yeah, definitely AI has something to blame for this, which is a good thing. You know, Typescript is is was I used to you we used to kind of sigh when it was like, oh, got to write us in Typescript or if people suggested or insisted we use TypeScript. There was a little bit of like H because there's so much upfront cost and and features just take double the amount of time because you got to type safe them and this and that. And the gains that you got from that were only seen much later on in the in the project. Whereas now because of AI because it's all type safe T type TypeScript first one the AI can work a ton better and two you you generally are just able to um work on your codebase a lot more efficiently because things are set up in a way that everything's type safe. You know what types and and things the functions get passed when you create a React component. You know what props it needs all through the power of TypeScript. So yeah, very welcome. This is part of a larger conversation on my show, Command AI, which we stream live every single week. We discuss the news and all things related to AI in the world of design and web. Catch us next week and join in the banter.
