This Website Is Insane: Iran History in 3D

In this video we talk about Persepolis Reimagined, Getty’s immersive web experience that lets you scroll through a wildly detailed 3D reconstruction of ancient Persepolis, how the site uses scale, color, and cinematic moments to make history feel alive, and why its interaction design is a rare example of doing things right like the 3D map-style menu, strong accessibility options (reduced motion, contrast, text size), and a slider that actually respects real-world input (trackpad, drag,s, and navigation) while still keeping the experience smooth and intentional. https://persepolis.getty.edu/ — TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:18 Scroll Begins 0:40 Old Iran 3D 1:49 3D Map Menu 3:02 Slider Rant — Unlock the full potential of your online presence with Kabarza and Samuel—experts in web design and development (respectively), powered by cutting-edge AI solutions. This website, I cannot I cannot wait to show you. It's amazing. It's insane. It's in solidarity with my people being on the streets and protesting for their rights. I'm going to show a website that is about old Iranian history and it's super cool. This website is by Getty. Basically, continue to scroll. There are some texts about this old civilization. We call it pers police. P. It's pers police. And then we press enter. Uh, and then we continue scrolling. We fly. And at the start, this is just a video being played. So this is just like static frames. Mhm. And then this is where it gets started. This is all 3D with insane level of details. Uh, going through how all of this like uh purse police was. Um it it far se is called taka jam sheet. Uh and here you can interact with it. You can see how it is today. You can read about it and you can also just scroll past and see the whole grow glory. You see uh the color red being used a lot. It's also like showing power. It's one of my favorite colors by the way. Uh, and it's just the website is really beautiful [snorts] and the level of like details in the 3D is genuinely insane. By the way, you see how huge these doors are. This is just like unbelievable. You see like these models and these like scroll interactions are absolutely amazing. And then here we are. This is probably like one of the biggest uh areas here. It's like huge. It's insane. It's beautiful. And now the menu. Look at this menu. You click it and then you are presented with this like beautiful interactive 3D map. Like when I say map like actual map. This is the point. This the menu is an actual map of the whole palace and everything around it and you can read about it. Uh the website also is available in multiple languages. So you can change the language. Yeah, I was going to say hit the settings because I noticed like you can reduce the motion, high contrast as well. So they feel Yeah. large text. And this is what people like typically when you show a website like this, people are like, "Fuck this. This is like so difficult to use. I don't like websites that take the control and everything." Here you have a good amount of like accessibility settings. If you don't like to experience it this way, you can do it in other ways. Um, and yeah, the the menu. I really like the menu and also the art index, which is kind of like a slider. Yeah, it's really cool. And this is, by the way, let me talk about sliders for a second. Like half of the sliders I see are not half like 99% of the sliders I see on the web are incomplete in my like from what I expect them to be. A slider to me should work with my mouse uh w with my touchpad not just the mouse but like with my trackpad. When I scroll with my fingers it should scroll on to the sides. This is what I mean. Like right now I'm scrolling to the sides and this is working. But I can also grab and drag it. So there are like multiple ways of doing it. I can also use the the top navigation to navigate it. So it has it all. And then on top of all of that I can scroll vertically. So right now I'm scrolling up and down like up and down or right or left does the same thing. And it's to be expected because this is just a section. And it's not a page to be scrolled. And I wish to see more sliders with this like level of control. Well, are they using um details are they losing a library? Can you infer what they're using? Uh I haven't checked actually uh for the slider, but Swiper is one of the most popular. So from the classes, I don't see see look at all the um you know data attributes and things like that. It doesn't say uh like it doesn't show these like smaller libraries that are like a slider library most of the time. It might not and I don't see much here. So I don't I don't think it is a library. Even the navigation here we see an um like a list. No, we don't see a lot. So they are using GSAP. The the library the the slider might be a GSA a custom GSAP slider. And this is done by Getty. Gety um like you can go and read about them. They do this type of stuff. They they have like really cool uh like projects they've done. So yeah. And this is a part of like the old Persia ancient Iran and the classical world. So they do these kind of like studies and exhibitions and then they do also like 3D and like digital versions of them. And this one was about pullies. Really cool. I'll link it below and go check it out. Uh it will probably make your laptop's fan turn on uh [laughter] or like your PC, whatever, because it's quite heavy, but it's it's worth it.
