Instagram just rolled out AI image editing to 3 billion users with their new "Restyle" feature for Stories! This might be the biggest AI rollout ever - putting powerful image generation directly into the hands of everyday users.
We break down how this works, why it's like having nano banana in your stories, and what it means when billions of people can suddenly deepfake their photos with simple prompts. While it'll be fun for private accounts to create silly images for friends and family, we also discuss the potential dangers of AI editing at this scale and why this represents a massive shift in how we consume visual content.

So, this might be the biggest AI roll out. Instagram has 3 billion monthly users and they just introduced an AI image editor for your stories. So, check our restyle. They are calling it restyle. Okay. And you can you can AI prompt your images and just I don't know like do do funny styles or deep fake stuff. Okay. So it's a it's a story. It's not a Yeah. And you can you can just basically prompt your image to, you know, to be different and to be more fake. I'm not seeing that. Yeah. It's not Yeah, it's not like immediate roll out for everybody from what I understand. It will be soon available to three billion people to you know fakeen their stories even more. So what can it do? What is what is it? It's it's it's just like Yeah, it's just like nano panana like you like having nano banana in your stories. A lot of people on on Instagram are uh there with like private accounts. Like most people are not influencers, you know, they're like private accounts and like sharing images with friends. And I think it at least for a minute it will be fun uh to you know to take a story picture and you know share it with your friends and family and do something funky with it and they'd be probably like you know your mom and dad or like grandmas be like what's happening there like what is that thing you're wearing? You know you can do funny stuff. uh could obviously be also bad, but yeah. Yeah, whatever. Doing some silly things to my friends. We can be specific and say, you know, that guy to the left of me, well, make him into a banana. Yeah. Yeah. Uh maybe you can circle around people. I don't know exactly what is the mechanics of editing. Uh but it's interesting especially that it's rolling out to so many people like the scale of this. I wonder how they'll do it. I mean obviously they will just whether there's like some sort of intro or some sort of onboarding thing because again people just don't grasp it. Doesn't look like there's any mention of AI though. It's just like restyle. Yeah. What model do you think they are using under I I literally think this is nano banana. Nano banana. Yeah, it's just it's is the one that's proven very uh consistent with unaffecting. Same with uh VO 3.1, you know, very good at not really affecting anything else and just just making the change that you want. So, it's kind of like soon we'll have like Snapchat filters but not limited to a specific filter. This is like literally your imagination. So maybe very soon the tech is available today but not at that scale not on your Instagram app but soon you will also make a video of yourself and then have a funny filter that you want on yourself which is like really fun until it gets to obviously like mental health and people trying to fake their lives and that that part is not that fun but this is part of a larger conversation on my show Command AI which we stream live every single week. We discuss the news and all things related to AI in the world of design and web.
