Apple Does the Unexpected – Releases Starflow, an Open-Source AI for Image Generation

In this video, we talk about Apple’s surprising release of Starflow, an open-source AI for image generation. Starflow uses a novel transformer auto-regressive flow architecture to generate small 256×256 images. While the image quality isn’t yet on par with other AI models, this release is notable because Apple rarely makes its AI open-source, making it an exciting step for developers and AI enthusiasts. We also discuss the setup, limitations, and what this means for the future of AI in design and creative tools. — TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - Intro — Unlock the full potential of your online presence with Kabarza and Samuel—experts in web design and development (respectively), powered by cutting-edge AI solutions. Apple have released a open source image generation model, Stable Flow. Um and it's an image generation thing, which by the way I tried to set it up before this show, but I couldn't I don't think think it works on Mac. So, it's developed by Apple, but it's actually just something that can probably just Linux or probably something on PCs or something, but it doesn't work. Anyway, that's not really the point. The point is is that they've released this open source image generation model, which uses something called the novel transformer auto regressive flow architecture. Okay. Yes, you heard that right. [laughter] But it's a new way to an efficient way to generate images. So, I think the bigger question is here is like one it's open source, two it's Apple, three it's AI. Never did I hear think I'd hear those three things in the same sentence, to be honest. Uh but there here we are. We're with Stable Flow. And you can go and download it and use it now if you've got a PC. [laughter] You don't You don't have a PC? I don't have a PC. To be fair, it could be something I'm setting up. I I basically just followed these instructions here. Um and uh and it was just you know, he's even got a a setup script, so you just run the setup script and it should do everything for you, but it's not and I don't I don't know why. you think I can do it? Yeah, look. This is it. This is it. And then and then you run and then you run that with a command, a cat playing a piano, and then it's done. Or then you can break it into like, you know, you can play around with the images are tiny. I think they're like 256 by 256, so they're tiny images that it can generate. But um I saw someone in the comments of the video that I watched and at the end of the day the the the quality isn't great, you know? So, which is why they've they've released one Oh, Claude is a contributor. Someone's vibe coding on it. You know, at the end of the day the results speak for themselves. It's not a great It's not It's not a great um images, but the progress is there. We're here to celebrate progress. Um but I wouldn't be rushing to generate your images with this yet cuz they're just not competing with them with with the likes of other image generation models, you know? Nano banana pro. Nano banana pro. This is part of a larger conversation on my show, Command AI, which we stream live every single week. We discuss the news and all things related to AI in the world of design and web. Catch us next week and join in the banter.
