Ads in ChatGPT: The Thing Nobody Asked For

n this video we talk about ChatGPT ads finally showing up, why that feels like a last resort move, and the exact promises OpenAI is making about “answers staying independent” and chats staying private from advertisers. We react to the wording around personalization (you can turn it off, clear ad data, and there will always be a way to not see ads via paid tiers), but we also question what “private” means when ads can still be “relevant to your conversations.” We also compare it to how Google ads slowly blended into search results over time, and why ads that hide in plain sight feel worse than obvious banners. Then we bring up an older leaked internal Google concept video about a future where advertising is not matching products to you, but creating products on demand for you, and the scarier idea: AI getting so good at reading you that it can show you something you basically cannot say no to. — TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Ads Hit ChatGPT 01:05 The “Independent Answers” Claim 03:01 Trust vs Shareholders 04:31 Leaked Google Concept 06:39 Ads Hide in Plain Sight 07:44 Who Sees Ads 08:43 “Relevant” to Your Chats 09:02 Sensitive Topics Loophole 10:08 The New Go Plan 10:42 Weekly Show Plug — Unlock the full potential of your online presence with Kabarza and Samuel—experts in web design and development (respectively), powered by cutting-edge AI solutions. It's kind of what we've all been fearing to be honest. Ads are finally here in chatbt and I think this is a bit of a disaster. Ads are probably the lowest you're scraping the barrel for f funding if you're if you resort to ads. Does this represent something even more disastrous at open egg? This is very interesting because you're saying like this is the the like the bottom like this is the last resort, right? For a company to make money. But we also know Facebook and Google they are making ton of money just from ads and they are like ad companies. But there is a difference or there is a point to make here. Companies who make money from ads and very successfully so and they are like based on that. There are companies who who also have turned into platforms where they capture your attention and you they keep you there. But with open AAI and chat GPT, I don't know how that will be because I'm a bit afraid of ads being like there even though they are showing in their principles. They say answer independent. So that means ads do not influence the answers chat GPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what's most helpful to you. Ads are always separate and clearly labeled. So this is kind of nice and reassuring. Conversation privacy. We keep your conversations with chat GPT private from advertisers and we never sell your data to advertisers. Like I I I don't know. So how can they target at is that like will I see ads for random stuff if it's not based on my conversation? Choice and control. You control how your data is used. You can turn off personalization. Ah, okay. Okay. So, that's that. Uh, and you can clear the data used for ads at any time. Will always offer a way to not see ads in chat GPT, including paid tier. Uh, that's ad free. So, these are to be honest reassuring, but I still don't, you know, it's chat cheap. You don't want ads. We Yeah. Long-term value. We do not optimize for time spent. I swear I did not read this. I did not read this before like making clearly this was not I did not read this. So, we optimize uh we do not optimize for time spent in chat GPT. We prioritize user trust and user experience over revenue. Well, we prioritize user trust and user experience over revenue. This this sentence doesn't make much sense once they are a public trading company because shareholder value baby you got to you got to uh increase it. Yeah, this there there needs to be and there probably is there needs to be a term about this because these two things work together. By prioritizing um trust, you gain financial reward. There's no no two ways about it. Gone are the days of the hard salesman tactic of pushing things down people's throats. People are more gentle about it now. Saying that, there's there's one thing to be said about like ads, right? Again, gone are the days of um being, you know, we always worried about people reading our emails, worried about people reading our messages. The way, and by the way, I don't know this, I have no data to show this, but it's so much more intertwined than that. And they'll and they'll cross reference that with other searches to be very, very specific. They get specificity out of multiple data sources rather than looking at your individual word. Disagree with me or agree with me, but that's where I feel like we we're getting so much more intricate with data now that I think there's only so much you can get from what people say in one conversation. You need to have it accessed across multiple things. Anyway, so there there was actually a very good very old video on this seven years ago. This is it said this is a leaked internal video by Google and it's a concept. This is way before AI was a thing. So the idea is what if AI or like Google advertisers would get to a point that they are so good can um create a product on demand for you not advertise a product like match a product to you but create a product for you and there is an even crazier point it's a just a concept what if it's what if AI I knows you so good. Like Chachi PT nowadays knows us so good. What if Chachi PT gets us better than our moms because you know your mom knows how you take like exactly she knows what to do that you cannot say no to. That's the point. What if the AI can show you something that you cannot say no to and advertise you that and you you see it and there is like let's say a near 100% chance of you purchasing it because you can't say no to it. Yeah. Now Chet GPT is obviously giving us the reassurance that they are not going to do this but I'm not sure if other companies are not going to do this. Um, like I'm I I do not I do not trust this for a second. Uh, Chat GPD to me is a very Facebook-like company. I I wish I could trust them, but I I just can't. I'm optimistic, but I don't trust Chat GPT. So, people use CH GPT for uh like like a therapist. So what if they with that amount of information about you, they could match you or like create products for you with ads that you cannot say no to. Uh anyway, this is something that you can write down in the comments and let us know how you feel about it. But this is how also it looks like it. It looks to me a bit I don't know. It's not too separated. I don't like it. My first impression, I don't like. Maybe it's because I don't like ads, but yeah, I don't like this. I don't like ads that try and um hide in plain sight. Yeah. And this is why I'm zooming in here. Separate and clearly labeled. Do you remember old days of Google that ads were more clear and with time they made it less and less clear to the point that right now there is this tiny sponsored thing that you see and we kind of have learned as a society that the like the first few links are probably ads anyway. Uh just like what you did you you completely ignored them. You didn't even count them as in the index. And the last uh slide here just to finish this off. What to know about um the ads test in chat GPT. Who will see ads? Free and go plans. Who won't see ads? Plus, pro business and enterprise stay ad free. I'm on plus by the way for now, but I will cancel and go to free I think. So uh I don't use chat not because of ads. Claude Claude is better. Uh how ads will work? Ads do not change chat GPT answers. Your data your chats with chat GPT are not shared with advertisers but it doesn't say that they are not personalized because they will be personalized. Ads will be clearly labeled as we talked about. It's not as clear as I would like it. Ads may be shown if they are relevant to your conversations. Oh, that's again we talked about but not necessarily personalized broadly personalized. It's relevant to mention nappies will show you nappies or something like that. Yeah. If I'm if I'm asking like what is the difference between this tea and this tea? It might show me a tea ad which is Yeah. I don't know. It's not bad but I don't like this invasion of privacy. Mhm. Um chats that include sensitive topics such as health, mental health, I swear again I did not read this before but yeah uh as mental health uh or politics are not eligible for ads. So this tells me all I need is to start all my conversation with something political. It will makes it Yeah. like actually this might work. I don't know. So I don't know. Like I say, I think ads are looking at broad concepts now as opposed to an intentions. But anyway, but for real like maybe it works if you do this. Maybe it works. Maybe it works. Yeah, I will try it. I will try it on or put it in your put it in your system prompt so it's always included as part of your You always have like by the way I vote for the rep or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. just to just to not show ads. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And my mental health is not really good. And and saying saying this as well, the only the only other thing to breeze we breezed over really here is this new go plan um which as will be shown for uh this was a plan that was much much cheaper aimed at sort of developing markets like India. Um and they're rolling it out to to the everyman. Obviously, you'll get ads, uh, but you do get a bit more. It's It might be something you downgrade to. It might be something I upgrade to. I don't really I barely use chat GPT to be honest, but it's a nice uh just an option for those just dipping their feet into it with extended usage of um latest models and this that and the other. So, yeah, pretty cool. This is part of a larger conversation on my show, Command AI, which we stream live every single week. We discuss the news and all things related to AI in the world of design and web. Catch us next week and join in the banter.
